Electrical Vehicle Charger Installation in Essex County
Helping Homeowners with Their EV Charging Stations
With more individuals purchasing electrical vehicles (EV) every year, the need for electrical vehicle chargers at home is higher than ever. In fact, over 95% of electric car charging is performed at home in the United States.
As EV chargers use quite a bit of power, determining if your electrical system can support your charger is a key component of this process. At Morris Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, we help homeowners install their electrical vehicle chargers while simultaneously making sure their existing electrical service can support such an addition.
What Is an EV Charging Station?
An EV has a battery that allows it to operate. This battery is dependent on electricity to work. If there is no electricity in the EV’s battery pack, it cannot move. Therefore, you need to replenish that electricity by charging the car’s battery. An EV charging station converts the electrical current from your house into a current flow the EV battery can accept. Your home electrical system will need to be equipped to handle this.
How Do You Install an EV Charger?
You should not attempt to install an EV charger by yourself as you need the assistance of an experienced electrician to do so. If you need to upgrade the electric service in your home before installing the EV charger, this is something an electrician can do for you. Electricians determine this by doing an electrical load calculation.
Here is what this calculation takes into consideration:
- Square footage of your house
- Number of electrical appliances (dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal etc.)
After finishing their calculations, an electrician will then determine if your home has a 100amp service, 200amp service, or something higher or lower than that. If your home has a 100amp service, it is unlikely that an EV charger will work. In this instance, you will require an electrical service upgrade to accommodate the addition of a charging station.
